FAQS

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THE USE OF BIRTH CONTROL?

There is a time and a place for anything. If your goal is hormonal regulation, normal periods, mood stability, etc, then birth control will not help you achieve this. Birth control is great for controlling symptoms, but does not address the root cause of the issues. If your aim is to just have symptomatic control, then that is absolutely your choice and birth control is probably a great option for you. My goal is always to educate women to understand how to fix their hormones from the root of the issues, which, unfortunately, birth control does not do.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

I do not take insurance anymore due to the rules and regulations of the insurance paradigm. Insurance dictates much of how doctors can practice, what tests they can run, what exams need to be done, and how much time can be spent with each patient. This doesn't allow me to provide the best care for you, so I have stepped outside the insurance model so that I can give you the care that you deserve to have.

HOW LONG UNTIL I SEE RESULTS?

Depends on your health when you come to me! If you've been having chronic hormonal issues for decades, this will take a bit longer to regulate than someone who is otherwise healthy and is just transitioning off birth control to prepare for conception. It also depends on your level of commitment and consistency with the therapies and strategies we implement. I can only guide you towards health, I can't make the changes for you!

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I DEDICATE TO WORKING WITH YOU?

At least 6 months. Hormones take time to regulate. It doesn't happen within one or two cycles. It takes 90 days to even create a mature follicle, so to see changes in ovulation patterns, estrogen, progesterone, etc will take a few months.

WHAT’S YOUR VIEW ON MEDICATION USE?

Again, there is a time and place for everything! I am absolutely not against medications. It can be very beneficial when needed. I also like to meet my patients where they are comfortable. If you are looking to be on medication but also wanting adjunctive support, then that's what I will work with you on. If, on the other hand, you are looking to manage your health without meds, then that's what we will work together to figure out. I’m here to help you, not to tell you what’s “right” or “wrong.”

WHAT IS EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE AND HOW DOES NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE FIT INTO THIS MODEL?

  • EBM has 3 pillars: Clinical judgement, patient preferences and values, and relevant scientific research.
  • EBM is not just looking for research that supports what some doctors believe or learned as student clinicians. It means meeting you where you are at AND prioritizing your goals, while pairing it with the BEST research we have available. Ultimately, this is a conversation that lasts longer than 7 minutes to discuss the strengths/weaknesses of various evidence paired with your goals and values.
  • Naturopathic medicine combines the best of all three worlds. We not only are well versed in the standards of care and the conventional algorithms, but we also know when and how to step outside of that box, when that box isn't working for you.

DO I HAVE TO BUY THE SUPPLEMENTS YOU RECOMMEND OR CAN I GET THEM FROM A HEALTH STORE?

You don't have to buy the supplements I recommend. But, I recommend these to my patients because these brands have therapeutic dosing of herbs and nutrients that are not available over the counter. Oftentimes, many people will buy supplements over the counter and complain that they "didn't work." This is because they most likely aren't of the best quality, adequate forms of certain nutrients, and don't contain the therapeutic quantities needed to elicit changes in your body. You wouldn't take a pharmaceutical medication at the wrong dose and expect it to work, right? Same with supplements!

HOW DO I KNOW IF INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE WILL GIVE ME THE RESULTS I'M LOOKING FOR?

If the results you're looking for are quick changes without effort, you likely won't find integrative medicine to be right for you. If you're looking for long term changes that are sustainable, then integrative medicine is right up your alley! When we work together, I am not just giving you a pill and sending you away. I am spending hours educating you about your body, what's going on, why the recommendations I am giving you are helping, and teaching you how to make lasting changes that you’ll carry forever.

HOW ARE INTEGRATIVE FERTILITY THERAPIES DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I WOULD GET FROM AN OBGYN?

Generally fertility treatments with your OBGYN will include medications to increase or decrease your hormonal levels to induce a period or ovulation. My job as an integrative provider is to find out why you're not ovulating in the first place. I want to make sure there are no underlying issues that are going unaddressed that are causing your body to not ovulate. I like to dig deeper to figure out why your periods are irregular, why you're having trouble maintaining a pregnancy, or why you're unable to get pregnant. This will also result in a smoother and healthier pregnancy and post-partum period when we address your overall health and figure out the root cause of your issues.
